 Legacy Story

Towson Family

e_towsonJudge William Malcolm Towson (LLB ‘49 LLB) of Dublin, Ga. has invested in the University of Georgia in many ways.

A founding member of the President’s Club, Towson and his wife Dorothy sent six children and one grandson to UGA. The Towson family established a memorial scholarship for the visually impaired in honor of their daughter, the late Margaret Ann Towson (BBA ‘77).

Towson first came to UGA from Laurens County in 1941, but his education was interrupted by World War II. After service, he returned to Athens and graduated with a law degree in 1949. Towson’s career in law began in Dublin, Ga. and culminated as a Superior Court Judge, a position he held for 23 years before retiring in 2001.

His UGA alumni brood of children include: Allen Hazlett(AB ‘68), a college professor in the Boston area; Dorothy Hazlett (A.B. ‘70), who resides in Dublin and works for the State Labor Department; James Towson V, (AB ‘78) a pastor in Metter, Ga.; William Towson, Jr. (BS ‘79) resident of Atlanta and employed by the Arch Chemical Corporation; Andrew Towson,(BBA ‘80, MBA ‘84), who works in the home office of Colonial Life Insurance Co. in Nashville. Towson’s brother, the late Ashley H. Towson (BSA ‘41), also graduated from UGA.

James V. Towson, Jr., a current student in the Terry College of Business, comprises the third Towson generation to attend UGA.

Towson has remained staunchly loyal to UGA and the bulldogs through the years. He and his wife have attended the Georgia-Florida game in Jacksonville for 40 years and never miss an opportunity to watch the Dogs on television.
