Showfety Family

showfetyA few days before the 2006 Georgia-Georgia Tech football game, students arriving for their class at the Jones Creek Jazzercise in Alpharetta were greeted by a ferocious stuffed bulldog sitting atop the large speaker in front of the hall.

Students who knew their instructor well were not surprised. Their instructor is a proud UGA legacy alumna whose fierce loyalty to the red and black is well known.

Amy Reeves Showfety ‘95, received her degree in special education and is surrounded by an immediate family and in-laws who are University alumni. Her husband, James R. Showfety ‘87, ‘96 teaches at Marist High School in Atlanta where he is also assistant head varsity football coach.

Her parents, Lewis and Jean McKnight Reeves both graduated in 1966. Showfety’s uncle, William “Bill” McKnight graduated in 1964.

Showfety was a member of he Delta Zeta soroirty as was her sister Kim Reeves Hoben who attended UGA before receiving her nursing degree from the Medical College of Georgia.

The legacy stretches through Showfety’s husband’s siblings as well. Robert E. Showfety ‘87 and wife Kelly, Lynn Showfety King ‘64, Anne Showfety’90 and Mary Showfety Vanover ‘80.

Showfety’s husband, father and brother-in-law were all members of Sigma Chi fraternity.

Prior to coming to John’s Creek Jazzercise, she was a special education teacher at Centennial High School where she was named the 1999-2000 “Teacher of the Year.”

Reflecting back on UGA, Showfety said, ” I can truely say that I lived a wonderful college life at the University of Georgia and am thankful to have married a man that loves UGA as well.” She and her husband have three children, Ryan Caroline, six and a half years, Samantha Jean, five years and Mary Reeves, six and a half months.
