At UGA’s Homecoming football game, when former cheerleaders gather to lead the team onto the field, look for the man running out with the big UGA flag, it will probably be Dr. Louis M. Scharff, ’55, of Augusta, GA.
For the last several years, Dr. Scharff, the Staff Physician for the Spinal Cord Unit of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Augusta, has held the duty of running the flag which he calls his “biggest claim to fame.” This, from a man who is a prominent, respected physician and a retired Army Colonel, says volumes about his regard for the Bulldogs.
He is one of eight immediate family members who hold degrees from The University of Georgia, and he presently has a grandson who is a freshman at UGA.
Scharff’s wife Dorothy, ’85 ABJ, owns her own business, Splendors, in Augusta where she designs and sells jewelry. The Scharff’s three sons also graduated from UGA.
Louis Michael, ’81 AB, is a Psychologist for Gracewood, a state medical facility for the mentally impaired and disabled in Augusta. Michael’s son, David A. Scharff, is a pre-pharmacy student presently enrolled at UGA.
Lawrence David, ’83 BBA, a distinguished AFROTC graduate at UGA is a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force Reserves and is Vice President of Sales for Climate Master, Inc. in Oklahoma City, OK. He has been extensively involved in the aftermath of the Gulf shore hurricanes.
Douglas Arthur, ’86 ABJ, owns and operates the New Yorker Market Place and Delicatessen, a popular restaurant in the Buckhead section of Atlanta.
Scharff’s brother, David Edwin, received two degrees from UGA a B.S. in 1963, and a BSPH in 1967. He lives in Augusta and has two sons who are Georgia alumnus – Louis Stephen, ’93 BSPH, of Atlanta, and Matthew Alexander,’93 BSW, of Augusta.
The Scharff family can be justly proud of its UGA alumni legacy.
