UGA student Heather McCormick (BS ’08) has an unusual biology professor: her grandfather, professor William Barstow.
Teaching relatives is nothing new for Barstow, who taught both of his daughters, Susan and Linda, when they attended UGA. Susan Barstow Ahrens took Barstow’s biology course and married Karl Ahrens (AB ’84), whom she met while in Athens. Susan is a nurse and Karl owns his own business.
Dr. Linda Barstow McCormick (BS ’84) took her father’s MCAT Review course while at UGA. She met Mark McCormick (AB ’82) while both served as resident advisors and the two later married and had daughter Heather.
The family resides in Carrolton, Ga., where Linda is a pediatrician and Mark teaches at Carrolton High School.
While Professor Barstow did not attend the University, his wife, Darlene Dunn Barstow (BA’63, MEd ’76, EdS ’86, EdS ’92), boasts four degrees from UGA.
