Arlington-Guenther Family

e_arlingtonBulldog alumni are found all over the United States, in fact, all around the world. However, there is a special nest of UGA graduates in the windy city of Chicago including the Arlington Guenther family.

Arly, ‘76, his son, Mike, ‘02, and his daughter, Laurie Ann, ‘05, form a dedicated trio of supporters of the red and black among the 971 UGA alumni who live in the Chicago area.

Bailey Family

For Stella Williams Bailey ‘69, ‘71 of Calhoun, Ga., attending a UGA home game is a family reunion of sorts.

Stella is married to William (Bill) Bailey ‘69 Political Science, ‘71 JD, whom she met while a student. Her family is loaded with three generations of UGA alumni who are die-hard Bulldog fans.

Stella majored in Family and Consumer Sciences and then earned her Masters degree in Family and Child Development. She now heads up her own business as a professional speaker and personal development consultant. Barstow Family

UGA student Heather McCormick (BS ’08) has an unusual biology professor: her grandfather, professor William Barstow.

Teaching relatives is nothing new for Barstow, who taught both of his daughters, Susan and Linda, when they attended UGA. Susan Barstow Ahrens took Barstow’s biology course and married Karl Ahrens (AB ’84), whom she met while in Athens. Susan is a nurse and Karl owns his own business.

Dr. Linda Barstow McCormick (BS ’84) took her father’s MCAT Review course while at UGA. She met Mark McCormick (AB ’82) while both served as resident advisors and the two later married and had daughter Heather.

Birchmore Family

birch2The Fred Birchmore family of Athens is one of the most interesting among University of Georgia alumni. Through two generations, family members have earned 19 degrees, with fifteen from UGA. A grandson, representing the third generation, has just completed his freshman year in Athens.

The family patriarch, Fred Sr., received his B.S. in 1932, and Master’s and Law degree in ‘34, while wife Willa Deane earned a B.S. in Business in 1939, a B.S. in Education in ‘59, Masters in Education in ‘63 and her EDS in ‘74.

Four University of Georgia coeds are happily maintaining a strong family tradition – they are fourth generation Bulldog legacies.

Sisters, Beth, Kim and Laura Bland and their first cousin Elizabeth Martin are following in the steps of their mothers, grandparents, and great grandfather.

All four legacies are from Tifton, Ga., and the three Bland sisters are Family and Consumer Sciences majors as were their mother, aunt and grandmother.

One University of Georgia senior had decided while still in high school that she would not attend UGA, but ended up a third generation alumni legacy.

Ashley Claire Branan of Washington, Georgia felt she should go away to college. Athens was too near, forty miles, and her grandparents lived here.

An excellent student — Salutatorian of her high school class, she had her choice of colleges, so she began visiting other campuses. She discovered, however, that “none of them compared to Georgia.”

Broder Family

The Broder family of Stockbridge, Ga. might have the largest number of UGA alumni in their immediate family of any in the world.

Seven children, three of their spouses, and four grandchildren are UGA graduate graduates and four grandchildren are presently enrolled — with “more to come” says a family spokesman.

Hans Broder was a Vocational Agriculture teacher in his native Switzerland. In 1951, he came to America on a special one-year assignment to establish a cheese factory in Henry County, Georgia. He never left. One year later, he purchased land for … continue reading »


Brown Family

e_brownKay Kilgore Brown ‘79, ‘80, currently serving as a temporary Administrative Assistant for the Alumni Association, is part of a three generation UGA alumni legacy.

The late James A. Kilgore, Brown’s father, served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and then entered UGA in 1945. Kilgore retired as president of the Federal Land Bank in Dalton, GA in 1986. He originally planned to major in pharmacy, but his career took a turn and he ended up retiring as president of the Federal Land Bank in Dalton, GA in 1986.

Callie Jill Ezernack, BBA’91, is proud to be a third generation UGA alumna and she has a special place in her heart for her grandfater, Archie Thomas Mauldin, BSA’32, who started it all.

Archie passed away recently. He would have been 97 this month. He lived in Royston where his wife of 70 years, Faye Turner Mauldin still resides. She attended UGA until she was married to Archie.
