In 1928 Mitchell and Myrick met at the Georgia Press Institute and became close friends. When "Gone with the Wind" began filming, Mitchell was concerned the book's southern traditions would be misinterpreted. She recommended Myrick as a technical advisor. In 1939, Myrick reported to work on the set as "arbiter of manners and customs."

The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library at the University of Georgia Library is home to the largest collection of Margaret Mitchell letters, manuscripts and telegrams, which were donated to the library by Mitchell’s brother, Stephens Mitchell.
