UGA Law Professor Pens Book on Free Speech in Public Schools

The University of Georgia Law School is pleased to announce Speaking Up: The Unintended Costs of Free Speech in Public Schools (Harvard University Press, 2009), written by Professor Anne Proffitt Dupre ‘88.

Judges, teachers, principals and legislatures have been stuggling for decades to find a formula for school speech that balances liberty and order.  This debate has played out against the vibrant tapestry of some of the most riveting periods in American history.  It spans the Nazi build-up in Europe, the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement and the Columbine shootings.  The players in this rich drama are complex and fascinating characters.  Professor Anne Proffitt Dupre uses the court opinions of the time to bring the school speech story to life in a clear and lively style, sprinkled with wry humor.

Nationally recognized as an expert in education law and policy, Anne Proffitt Dupre joined the University of Georgia School of Law faculty in 1994 and, 10 years later, became the fourth woman in Georgia Law history to be appointed to an endowed position.  She currently occupies a J. Alton Hosch Professorship and teaches Education Law, Children and the Law, and Contracts.  She is a 1988 graduate of the Georgia School of Law, where she graduated first in her class and served as editor in chief of the Georgia Law Review.
