Dr. Linda Long-Mitchell '92, '94, '02

Linda A. Long-Mitchell has been teaching in the School of Social Work at the University of Georgia since 2004. She served as Director of the BSW program at the University of Georgia School of Social Work at Gwinnett from 2006-2008. In Linda's current position as a faculty member of UGA's School of Social Work's Title IV-E Program, she teaches BSW and MSW students courses in child welfare, cultural diversity in social work practice, social work clinical practice with individuals, couples, families, and groups, family dynamics, children and Adolescents in schools, and field education. Dr. Long-Mitchell has previously taught at the University of South Florida, and at East Carolina University.

Linda's research experiences include Culturally Diverse children and adolescents, their families, school and peer experiences, and their social-emotional development. She has also been active in authoring scholarly works including published book chapters and scholarly journal articles. She has also presented her research at national conferences. Her most recent publication is a book chapter entitled ‘Academically talented Black adolescent students' perceptions of how teachers impact their achievement.' In J. Linda has practiced as a therapist and consultant in the N.E. Georgia community for over 15 years focusing on mental health services for children, adolescents, individuals, couples, and families. She has also practiced as a school social worker, administrator, and consultant in child welfare. She has worked as a clinician in private practice, non-profit, and state organizations including as a Child and Adolescent therapist at Advantage Behavioral Health Services, with couples and families at Family Counseling Services, Inc., as a therapist at Samaritan Counseling Services, and as a clinician for UGA students at the University of Georgia's Health Services Counseling and Psychological Services clinic among other places. She has also worked as a child welfare consultant with the Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS) in the N.E. Georgia area on treatment goals and interventions for children and families in the community.

She has earned several awards for her community work, service, and scholarship. She is the recipient of fellowships/grant awards from the Georgia Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, the African-American Success Foundation, and the Trio Achiever Southeastern Association of Education Opportunity Program Award.

Linda earned her Bachelor of Science on full-tuition scholarship in Educational Psychology with minor hours in Child and Family Development from the University of Georgia in 1992, her Master of Social Work degree with Certification in Marriage and Family Therapy from UGA in 1994, and her Ph.D in Educational Psychology from the University of Georgia in 2002. She was awarded the University if Georgia College of Education Scholarship and the Dell Jones Memorial Scholarship for her academic achievement and was inducted into the Kappa Delta PI, Kappa Delta Epsilon, and the Pi Lambda Theta Honor Societies. She is married to Joe Lewis Mitchell, a minister and author.
